Introducing Scholls Fairy: a COMMS 101 Midterm Project

In a strange intersection of homework and passion-project, I have decided to introduce an artistic pseudonym and her accompanying lore on various social media platforms. For years I’ve wondered when it would be time, and felt the stars align when I saw my COMMS 101 Midterm due date was none other than October 31st in the year of our Lord 2023—Halloween(!!!)

Halloween seemed the perfect day to present my mysterious debutant, my very own pen name. But in a benevolent twist of fate, the midterm deadline was extended to tonight: November 4th. This was much appreciated as I definitely needed those extra couple days, but not gonna lie, I miss the spooky symbolism.

But you could’ve turned it in before the eleventh hour! …no I could not have ;(

My ADD, my perfectionism-induced procrastination, and my reputation as a self-proclaimed coward would not allow it. The only thing I fear more than turning in something subpar and lame is turning in nothing at all. So you’ll find me there at the 11:58:00 mark just about every time.

Anyway, we’re all gonna have to pretend November 4th is spooky and special for my sake. If it helps, dwell on the fact that it’s the fourth day of Manatee Awareness Month! (idk about you, but those stubbly sea cows always gave me the creeps in a healthy lil non-traumatic way <3)

I would rather run into a shark. Where are its eyes 😭 help

Okay now that I’ve completed the introductory agenda (i.e. overshared, whined, scared the children, and waxed poetic so hard I’ve got metaphorical folliculitis), I’d like to introduce the beloved pseudonym I plan to publicly share my art and writing through… Scholls Fairy.

Who is Scholls Fairy?

In three words: better than me. In forty: Scholls Fairy is the persona to which I plan to attribute any creative endeavors I want to share online. She is named after a childhood misunderstanding of mine, as well as my favorite road in the world (aka Portland, OR).

First time I tried drawing Scholls Fairy (10-18-23). 4 hours. Uncanny, creepy, colorful. A pretty good approximation.

Why not use my real name?

Because I—Annie Watson—am perpetually scared and chronically embarrassed, I’m trying to loophole my way out of anxiety & into content creation by taking on a pen name.

Ideally this will foster the palatable illusion that my work isn’t out there for people to see, judge, and hate, but rather the art of some fictional cryptid-lady who stopped caring what people thought about her centuries ago.

Looking at the Launch!

Scholls Fairy on Instagram: Added a profile photo and bio. Posted a reel of a recent original drawing coming together.

2nd time I tried drawing SF (10-21-23). 3.8 hours. Forehead’s too small, but it hints at her vanity, so we’ll allow it. Better the 2nd time.

Scholls Fairy on X (née Twitter): Added a profile photo and bio, and posted the link to my Tumblr account.

Scholls Fairy on YouTube: Added a profile photo and bio. Posted a YouTube short of a recent original drawing.

Scholls Fairy on TikTok: Added a profile photo and bio (i.e. “writer, artist, anchoress”).

Scholls Fairy on Tumblr: Added a profile photo and bio. Posted a photograph I took and edited.

some original art I posted to Tumblr with the caption “first post < 3 !!! felt cute, might delete later”

Scholls Fairy on Reddit: Created an avatar and added a bio. Recorded and posted a cover of “The Waiting” on r/angelolsen.

Scholls Fairy on Pinterest: Added a bio and profile photo, and unlocked a few boards (e.g. Adverti$ing and Rooms) so the public has something to see.

Scholls Fairy on Bandcamp: Uploaded three songs I wrote and recorded (with original cover art): “Not A Miracle Anymore,” “Lady Levity,” and “Among Other Things.” Also added a profile photo, custom header I made in PhotoScape (the poor man’s Photoshop), and the bio “amateur singer-songwriter!”

the first three songs I’ve ever written and shared online!
